Weekly Family Activities in Beijing

Weekly Toddler-Friendly Meet-ups in Beijing

Posted by

One challenge that I’ve consistently found when moving to a new place is starting over. Finding new friends. And, most importantly, maintaining those friendships AND keeping the kids… entertained.

And so as a stay-at-home mom, I’m always on the look-out for activities with my toddlers where other adults are also present. I like having my kids around, but I kinda miss big people talk.

Fortunately, the parents of Beijing have been quite active in organizing activities targeted towards both guardians and kids together. There a number of playdates, reading sessions, arts and craft-type activities and more throughout the city—we just gotta know when and where they take place.

Weekly Family Activities in Beijing

And so in this post, I’ve listed down the few that I know of. If there are any that I’ve missed, feel free to let me know by leaving me a comment below! (If you’re finding my list too tedious and want a summary, there’s one near the end of the post!)

MONDAY THRU FRIDAYS

Bumps2Babes

Bumps2Babes is a parenting community that aims to connect parents of young children with each other. They have different playgroups almost every day, each of them managed by a volunteer parent. Beijing can be quite daunting especially if you don’t speak the local language, but meeting people who have been there, done that makes all the difference. Better if those conversations can take place while your same-aged children are also getting to know each other.
This community connects more easily through its Wechat group.
The group is for the mamas with little ones on the way and tots under 4. Click here to read more about Bumps2babes, or better yet join a playgroup fit for your young child by sending them an e-mail at beijingbumps2babes@gmail.com.

MONDAYS

Moms of Preschoolers & Moms Next

Moms of Preschoolers, Moms of Primary SchoolersI discovered MOPS through BICF, a local Church I attend. A free bi-monthly parenting talk with childcare—what a curious thing!

Naturally, I assumed that the parenting talks at MOPS were centered on Christianity, but I found that the focus was really more on motherhood rather than preaching the Bible. Mothers from different backgrounds come together and listen to a speaker sharing his or her expertise on a topic. A discussion follows, where the members are encouraged to share their different takeaways from the talk. But what amazed me even more was that the women organizing these talks were really volunteers, and that they were pouring their time and effort into helping other moms through these talks and by providing childcare. I started volunteering a few weeks after joining, and personally I feel like the group has really helped me grow as a mother and a member.

*MOPS sessions are on the second and fourth Monday of the month from 10:30AM-12:00NN. The second Mondays are talks while the fourth Mondays are Dig Deeper sessions. For more information please click here.

FRIDAYS

Safari Song Time

Safari Song TimeThe weekly Safari Song Time classes makes me wish that L2 was still much littler, or that the teacher had organized these classes much, much earlier! Teacher H is a very energetic lady who started teaching this class after being inspired by teaching her own son. So every week she takes other parents and their babies along on animal adventures through different songs and dances. I really recommend this for those with kids under 18 months. P.S. There’s gonna be some baby-lifting involved!
*The Safari Song Time sessions are every Friday at 10:30AM at the Bookworm and costs 60RMB per child.

Beijingles
Beijingles I talked to the organizer of Beijingles about her inspiration behind this weekly meet-up, and here is what she says, “I have always been amazed at how expensive preschool activities are in China (I have lived in Shanghai and Beijing). Often you are looking at 300plus rmb per child per session. Many places ask you to sign up for six months in advance and requires you to hand over a big pile of cash at the outset! At those kind of prices, with three children many activities were simply too expensive. So I was determined to make Beijingles affordable: 70rmb per child per session, siblings half price and sibling babies under 8 months free. No sign up, just drop in.”
I have to agree with her on this. One thing that surprises me in Beijing is how expensive it is to send a child to a singing class or an art class here. For those who live in Shunyi, here’s a fun activity that won’t break the bank. 🙂
Beijingles’ Friday meet-ups are at 2PM at the Riviera Clubhouse. If you are interested in joining, you can send me an e-mail and I can bring you into the group.
